Lisa Ruch, artist

From a young age, I found myself enraptured by the kaleidoscope of colors and textures that the world offered. My journey through various creative outlets—from drawing to quilting to fiber arts—was a search for the perfect medium to express this fascination. It wasn't until I stumbled upon collage that my passion for art truly ignited. The marriage of vivid hues, acrylic paint, mixed media elements, and the sheer exhilaration of making a mess in the process captured my imagination like nothing else.

As my artistic journey unfolded, I embraced a self-directed education, immersing myself in an ever-expanding array of methods and styles. I delved into techniques spanning from collage and drip painting to paint pouring and the creation of three-dimensional mixed media works.

My focus gravitates towards the realm of three-dimensionality, where I find my artistic voice resonating most profoundly. Rooted in a deep connection to the world around me, my creative process is steeped in the rich tapestry of personal experiences, significant encounters, and the omnipresent forces of nature.

In the act of creation, my pieces take on lives of their own, akin to characters in a novelist's tale. They whisper their stories to me, revealing their innermost selves, and I endeavor to capture their essence on canvas. I relish the inclusion of unexpected elements—fur on birds, bling adorning foxes, or bold, vibrant hues that defy convention—infusing my work with a sense of whimsy and wonder.

Music serves as both a companion and catalyst on my artistic odyssey, guiding my spirit and hands as I bring each piece to life. As melodies weave through the air, my subjects materialize, their personalities emerging with each stroke of the brush—often surprising even me with their unfolding narratives.

Driven by a penchant for the vibrant and the eclectic, I thrive on experimentation and innovation in my work. My goal is to evoke delight, spark discovery, and ignite the flames of imagination in those who encounter my art. For me, each creation is a thrilling voyage of exploration, a journey where art breathes life into my soul, and I eagerly anticipate the discoveries and inspirations that lie ahead.

The piece is first sculpted in oil-based clay. The video shows a small bit of the mold-making process which follows. The process takes about 6 hours altogether, between making the silicone mold and the support shell (or ‘mother mold’). Finally, the piece is ready for casting followed by a gesso primer, painting, embellishments, and any other finishing touches.
