Gaia Gone Gaudy

As I delved into another sculptural piece for my 'Song of Myself' series, I felt drawn to incorporate maps as the 'palette' for it. The idea resonated with me as a symbol of life's journey, as we each explore a unique path.

Carefully placing fragments of maps onto the figure, I found myself building bodies of water and arranging the colors in intricate designs.  I noticed that some yellow pieces had green lines on them. Placed just-so they became a natural border between her chest and her torso, creating what appears to be a strapless camisole adorning her slender young figure.

As I progressed, the figure’s soul began to take shape, although she certainly was not speaking to me about the ‘journey of life’ concept I had started with. Rather, this was Gaia, not as the motherly figure often depicted, but as a teenage Earth.

This teenage Gaia, clad in an ensemble of maps, reflected the gaudiness of modern society's impact on the planet. From glittering city lights to towering skyscrapers to a seemingly never-ending growth of buildings, we've adorned Gaia with our own creations, transforming her appearance into something not all that practical.

Adding finishing touches of gold trim and jewelry to the piece, I christened her 'Gaia Gone Gaudy,' capturing the rebellious spirit of a teenager experimenting with her identity. Yet, beneath this “You’re not going out like THAT, young lady!” exterior, there lies a deeper truth – Gaia's resilience and ability to evolve.

Despite the chaos we've wrought, Gaia will endure through this phase, shedding her garish attire as she matures into her true self. We may face consequences for our actions, but Gaia will persist, adapting and finding balance once more.

So, let us recognize our place in Gaia’s story during this awkward and gaudy phase for her. This phase is only a transient part of her ever-evolving narrative.
